I am responsible.
When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help,
I want the hand of A.A. always to be there.
And for that: I am responsible.
We are the General Service Representatives. We are the link in the chain of communication for our groups with the General Service Conference and the world of A.A.
Background on A.A. Preamble published in Grapevine.
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are selfsupporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
The Area is divided into 24 Districts with each District being served by an elected District Committee Member Chair (D.C.M.C.), or District Committee Member (D.C.M.) in the Spanish speaking Districts. In 2006 there were 1,808 A.A. Groups and 56,075 members reported in the Area. In that year, the M.S.C.A. was the largest Area in A.A. membership and second largest in A.A. Groups in the Conference. The M.S.C.A. was tied at 56th with the Northwest Texas Area in per capita contributions ($3.33) and fourth largest in total Area contributions ($197,202.68).
With the rapid growth in numbers of A.A. members and .A. Groups in the M.S.C.A., it was necessary to add the D.C.M.C. position in English-speaking Districts to maintain the integrity of the original Districts without interfering with effective communications between the A.A. Groups (through their G.S.R.s) and the District Committee Member (D.C.M.). D.C.M.s serve Subdistricts within Districts. Spanish-Speaking Districts do not use the Subdistrict structure; their District leaders are D.C.M.s.
The Mid-Southern California Area has one of the largest Spanish-speaking populations in the Conference. The Area's Spanish-speaking structure is expanding to accommodate the growth of this community in A.A. and in the Area. District numbers 20 to 29 have been reserved for this growth. There are six Spanish-speaking Districts that cover the entire Mid Southern California Area. (See P.12.)
